Subzero temperatures and high-accumulation snowstorms in mid-January presented challenges for commuter and resident students as they travelled across campus, as well as for Facilities Management Office crews who worked to keep the campus maintained. Director of Facilities Management Larry Hendrick said that while the struggle with snow this winter was not much different than in previous years, the salt usage and overtime spent trying to remove the snow were slightly increased. Junior Jessica Miller, who commutes from Latrobe, said she had trouble traveling to campus. “I don’t mind driving out to school, but the cold actually caused a lot of problems with my car,” she said. “There were a couple of times where I couldn’t get it to start.” She added that the severe cold broke her garage door, so she has to open and close it manually when she leaves for SVC and returns home.
