Students travel globally over spring break to learn, serve

Killian Loch The stereotypical college student on spring break, as movies and television would suggest, is one who travels south to white, sandy beaches in Florida or Mexico, dancing with boisterous revelers and downing cold drinks while Jimmy Buffett’s “Margaritaville” plays in the background. Certainly, there is a germ of truth to this stereotype. What it does not take into account, however, is that for as many students who take leisure trips, many more take trips for other reasons. For instance, many Saint Vincent College sports teams took advantage of the time off to head south to practice their skills and come closer together as teammates. SVC sports teams travel for training over spring break

With the arrival of spring break, the spring sports teams of Saint Vincent College were busy preparing to start their seasons, with many departing south for their annual trips. Between practices, games and having fun, each team had its own agenda over the break. This year the women’s lacrosse and women’s tennis teams headed together to Orlando, Fla. Both coached by Jym Walters, the teams traveled to Florida by bus. On the teams’ way to Orlando, they stopped in Fayetteville, N.C., where the lacrosse team played a game against Methodist. After the game, the team continued to head toward their destination in Orlando. Several factors added up to fund the teams’ trip, including fundraising, events and contributions. In reference to women’s lacrosse, Walters said that “The Nike Lacrosse camp brings in some money, and we also ask for some money from the students and players to help fund the trip.”Read More

Unpopular club policies undergo changes

Last semester, the implementation of new club rules caused several difficulties for clubs planning events and raising money. These rules included a chaperone policy as well as regulations concerning food and catering. After stirring debate, these issues were addressed and discussed at a Council of Presidents meeting held on Nov. 4 of last year. Policy changes were announced this January. The Council of Presidents conducts meetings between the Student Government Association, Campus Life and club presidents on a regular basis. In the past, incidents occurred that prompted the Council of Presidents to implement the chaperone policy in question. The rule had stated that one chaperone from the Saint Vincent faculty or staff was required for every ten students attending a club trip off campus. At least one chaperone was required on the trip.
