Activities Programming Board events started on Sept. 2 with “Welcome Back Wing Night.” Over 1,000 wings from the local restaurant Dino’s were severed to students. APB also had a tie-dye party where freshman were given free laundry bags with APB logos. This year, the APB leadership board has greatly increased the number of events planned for students. Chairperson Jimmy Singer fronts APB. There is also a group of team leaders including Caroline Colcombe, Maura Fitzpatrick, Carly Mazzone, Colin McLaughlin and Ashlee Zaffina. These six students plan out the events for the semester. In addition, the leadership team members each have their own teams. While team members do not plan events, they do help in various ways such as setting up events and helping with organizing. Freshman Michael DeSantis recently signed up to become a member of the APB team at the school’s annual club fair. “I like to be involvedRead More

Students find ways to fight the winter blues

To the dismay of many students, sled riding is no longer allowed on portions of the hill outside Saint Benedict Hall. Public Safety put up warning signs in these places where students are not allowed to sled ride. “We have to do as much as we can to make sure our students are safe,” said the Associate Dean of Students Bob Baum. Sled riding down the Saint Benedict hill was often referred to as a freshman rite of passage, but without this popular winter activity, what should students do for fun in the winter? About 25 percent of college students in the United States suffer from Season Affective Disorder, a depressed state associated with the wintertime. What is a Bearcat to do to combat the winter blues? Binge-watch Netflix? Nope! Students should instead participate in activities going on in the Saint Vincent community. A great way to relieve stressRead More

On Oct. 27, Horror Week will kick off with APB’s Haunted Hallways, starting at 8:30 p.m. in the Carey Center. This activity will end at 9:30 p.m. in the PAC and will be followed by a two act Special Effects Make-Up Presentation performed by Penny Lambright. “That’s actually what started this was this make up demo,” said Lambright. “I had asked Deanna Wicks if she would be interested in having me do one before Halloween to give everyone a chance to learn some tricks.” The presentation willRead More

Junior engineering science major Alexander Schwartz and the Activities Programming Board (APB) are organizing a dance entitled “Drop the Books” in Alcuin Hall on May 2 from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. This charity dance aims to help raise money and goods for local libraries and food banks and to promote awareness of local disc jockeys and their music. Tickets are $5 for general admission and may be purchased from the Campus Life office. Students who choose to bring either books or canned food to donate at the event can buy tickets for $2, while students who bring both receive tickets free. Coordinators are considering including higher-priced VIP tickets, which will include food and a meet-and-greet with the DJs. Schwartz and the APB are working in collaboration with the Mythopoeic Society, Math Club, SGA, SVC Radio and other groups. Music will be provided by six DJs from the Pittsburgh area:Read More

The Activity Programming Board (APB)’s Horror Week kicked off on Monday, Feb. 24. Running from Monday to Thursday, Horror Week will feature four frightening and mysterious events, each beginning at 9:30 p.m. The first event began Monday with another chance to experience the popular Halloween ghost walks. Students met in the Carey Center, and then followed their guides across campus. The walks resembled those given in October, but with a twist: Not only did these walks feature SVC’s most chilling ghost tales, but the tour concluded in a haunted house set up in Alcuin Hall. On Tuesday, students are invited to participate in Mystery Bingo in the Carey Center. “When someone wins, they come up and there is a black bag and they pick their prize,” said APB Assistant Chairperson of Marketing, Tanner Beal. This event resembles a previous Black Friday Bingo that APB hosted in the past. “You neverRead More
