Bearcat of the Week

Following a successful fall that concluded with a second place finish at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Fall Championship, the Saint Vincent College Women’s golf team has gotten off to an impressive start this spring. After a loss to Warner University in Sebring, Fla., the Bearcats placed fourth out of eight teams in the Grove City Spring Invitational. Leading the way was junior Liz Loftus. Loftus finished sixth overall, shooting an impressive 91, earning The Review’s Bearcat of the Week honor.

Loftus, a resident of Harrisburg, began her golf career as a child when she started playing competitively in kindergarten. Loftus continued to play throughout high school. While attending Bishop McDevitt, Loftus earned trips to the district championship three consecutive years.

“I didn’t have a full appreciation for the game until I went to high school,” Loftus said. “That’s when I really started to play competitively.”

Following a successful high school career, Loftus knew she wanted to play at the next level. Being a Catholic institution and relatively close to her hometown, SVC was an ideal choice for Loftus.

“I grew up Catholic and attended Catholic school my whole life,” said Loftus. “I was looking to get away from home but still continue my Catholic education in a close-knit environment so Saint Vincent was an obvious choice.”

Loftus put together extremely successful freshman and sophomore campaigns. Her freshman season, Loftus carded four top-20 finishes highlighted by scoring a 98 at the PAC Fall Championship. She merited a top-10 finish at the Grove City Invitational, as well as scoring a 98 at the Spring PAC Championship to finish in a tie for 13th, earning All-PAC Honorable Mention.

Her sophomore season was no different, as Loftus earned Second Team All-PAC laurels after putting together an 11th place finish at the PAC Championship. Loftus finished in a tie for 10th place at the Thiel College Spring Invitational while carding a 96 at the Saint Vincent Spring Invitational. Although Loftus has earned immense success playing golf at SVC, she still holds high goals for her junior season.

“Personally, I would love to see an individual average lower than I’ve ever had at SVC,” Loftus said. “But more than anything, I would love to see my team be victorious in our upcoming matches and it would be even better if we could close the gap that is currently keeping us in second place overall in the PAC.”

Loftus and the Bearcats have a busy schedule this April, traveling to Thiel College before hosting the Saint Vincent Invitational on April 21. Following the SVC Invitational the Bearcats travel to Westminster College before the PAC Championships on April 29. For Loftus and her teammates, winning the conference is their most important goal. For Loftus, however, having a peaceful day on the golf course is a close second.

“My ideal day on the course would be a day where there is a nice breeze and the greens are in good conditions,” said Loftus. “Most importantly, my ideal day includes having a comfortable and enjoyable round with my teammates.”
