The Christmas break was a time for relaxation for students. However, for the faculty and staff of Saint Vincent College, it was a time to work on improvements and implement changes on campus. At the urging of numerous students, the Student Government Association requested that the country flags be put back up in the cafeteria. Over break, the monastery monks washed and ironed the existing flags while Coordinator of Multicultural and Residence Life Alydia Thomas, Vice President of Student Affairs Mary Collins, International Student Union board member Aliethia McLeod and Br. Norman Hipps collaborated to determine any new flags that should be hung to honor the current and former students and their home countries. The new countries included are Canada, Columbia, Egypt, France, the Republic of Georgia, Hungary, Ireland, Jamaica, Mexico, Nepal, Peru, Poland, Senegal, Slovakia, Taiwan, Tajikistan and Vietnam. The new flags cost about $700 and Student Affairs sponsoredRead More

Oscar nominations fuel conversation of racial inequality

With Martin Luther King, Jr. Day only recently past and unrest in Ferguson and other places still a recent memory, the topic of racial tension remains fresh on the public mind perhaps now more than in recent years. This year’s Oscar nominations sparked new related controversy. The nominations, which were announced on Jan. 15, led many to feel upset about the lack of both racial and gender diversity on the list of nominees for the best actor category. This year’s list consists strictly of white actors. Many took to social media to voice their views on the matter. According to Ben Fritz, a journalist for The Wall Street Journal, “The Oscars are often a focal point for complaints about diversity in the movie industry, which studies have found remains less racially diverse on-screen and behind-the-scenes than the nation as a whole.” Fritz further wrote that “Exacerbating that is the factRead More

With the end of January, the Saint Vincent College men’s and women’s swimming teams look toward the Presidents’ Athletic Conference championships as the teams’ regular seasons come to a close. Now with only one more meet remaining before PACs, the SVC men’s team has an overall record of 5-3-0. Not only does the team’s overall record impress, but the Bearcats also boast a 3-1-0 conference record. Senior captain Zachary Ligus said, “The men’s team’s success is attributable to the outstanding work done by this year’s freshman class.” Meanwhile, the SVC women’s swimming team currently holds an overall record of 3-6-0 and a conference record of 2-3-0. One non-conference meet remains, and though it is important, the women’s team is mainly focusing on redeeming themselves in the conference championships. “Honestly, the SVC women are the better swimming team,” said Ligus, “so I expect them to earn redemption at the conference championships.”Read More

Saint Vincent College’s field hockey team played from the fall of 2005 until the fall of 2011 when a lack of players caused the sport to be canceled. The field hockey program was started by Stacey Hart in 2005. In 2006, Jym Walters took over for Hart, and continued to coach for six years. For the Fall 2012 season, Nicole Hinerman was named head coach after having coached in an assistant position in previous years. However, in August 2012 before the season began, the Saint Vincent athletic director, Rev. Myron Kirsch, O.S.B., announced that the 2012 season would be cancelled for the Bearcats. Ever since the cancelation of the team, the sport has not been revived. Former head coach Walters stated, “The issue was the popularity [of field hockey] in the Southwestern Pennsylvania area … we couldn’t get the players based off the access to our traditional schools.” Senior ChristineRead More

Sometime before noon on Wednesday, Jan. 7, two masked gunmen forced entry into the headquarters of the weekly newspaper “Charlie Hebdo” in Paris. The assailants, later identified as Algerian brothers Saïd and Chérif Kouachi, opened fire upon several people in the lobby before using a hostage to gain access to a staff meeting on the second floor of the building. Once inside the meeting room, the gunmen identified Stéphane Charbonnier, the editor-in-chief, and again opened fire. Shots rang out in the streets as Saïd and Chérif fought with police as they made their way to a getaway car parked in front of the Charlie Hebdo headquarters. The fighting in the streets left police officer Ahmed Merabet, who was also of Algerian descent and a Muslim, dead. Witnesses reported the gunmen shouting, “We have avenged the Prophet Muhammad. We have killed Charlie Hebdo!” The men, who identified themselves as members ofRead More

Last semester, the implementation of new club rules caused several difficulties for clubs planning events and raising money. These rules included a chaperone policy as well as regulations concerning food and catering. After stirring debate, these issues were addressed and discussed at a Council of Presidents meeting held on Nov. 4 of last year. Policy changes were announced this January. The Council of Presidents conducts meetings between the Student Government Association, Campus Life and club presidents on a regular basis. In the past, incidents occurred that prompted the Council of Presidents to implement the chaperone policy in question. The rule had stated that one chaperone from the Saint Vincent faculty or staff was required for every ten students attending a club trip off campus. At least one chaperone was required on the trip. With the policy in place last semester, clubs expressed the difficulty some of them faced in abidingRead More
